The Dallas Mavericks weren’t done making moves when the 2023 NBA Draft was over. In addition to trades that netted them draftees Dereck Lively Jr., Olivier-Maxence Prosper and veteran Richaun Holmes, Dallas signed undrafted prospects Jordan Walker from UAB to a one-year deal and TCU’s Mike Miles Jr. to a two-way contract.
Walker, 23, is a 5-foot-11 guard with a standout 2022-23 season at UAB. Affectionately called “Jelly,” he averaged 22.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 33 games. Walker shot 40.3 percent overall and 37.8 percent from deep. In postseason play, he helped lead the Dragons to the NIT championship game, where UAB fell to Conference USA rival North Texas.
During his collegiate career, Walker was named the 2022 Conference USA Player of the Year, 2022 Conference USA Newcomer of the Year and a two-time First-Team All-Conference USA selection in 2022 and 2023.
Miles was the leading scorer for the Horned Frogs during his final year at TCU. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 17.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 27 games. He shot the ball exceptionally well, connecting on 49.7 percent of his overall field goal attempts and 36.2 percent on his three-point looks.
Miles was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2021 and selected to the Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2022 and 2023. Miles’ most significant upsides are his ability to score at every level and his leaping ability. However, his size and inability to guard multiple positions could give him some trouble at the next level.
Both players should feature prominently on the Mavericks’ Summer League team in Las Vegas in July.
