Despite the fact that they’re currently on a hiatus, BTS returns to the Hot 100 this week, as the South Korean superstars send their latest track “Take Two” to the tally of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. The tune marks their first hit on the ranking in 2023, and it keeps their winning streak going—the most impressive ever by far among their countrymen.
“Take Two” debuts at No. 48 on this week’s Hot 100, securing BTS their first win of the year. With this new smash, they have now reached the chart at least once a year since 2017, making 2023 the seventh year in a row when the group has achieved this feat. No other South Korean musical act has managed to accomplish such a consistent presence on the Hot 100. In fact, many popular groups from any country or of any style in America these days struggle to attain this level of success.
BTS first appeared on the Hot 100 in 2017 with their single “Mic Drop,” which featured then-hot rapper Desiigner. The fact that they made it onto the list at all was historic at the time, and few knew just how immense the septet would become.
In 2018, they quadrupled their Hot 100 appearances, debuting a trio of tunes onto the tally. This collection included hits with Nicki Minaj and Steve Aoki, as collaborations were instrumental in their success during that time.
In 2019, duets once again propelled BTS back to the Hot 100. They landed two more smashes that year, including “Boy with Luv” with Halsey, which reached a new high of No. 8 on the chart. They also teamed up with Lauv for “Make It Right.”
2020 can be regarded as the year when BTS broke out entirely on their own. They no longer needed anyone to help them score a hit, as they sent an incredible 12 songs to the Hot 100. Not only did they reach the No. 1 spot for the first time, but they also achieved three No. 1 hits in a single year—a feat accomplished by only a handful of artists.
In 2021, BTS doubled their total number of Hot 100 champions, pushing three more catchy cuts to the top of the chart. They debuted four tunes on the Hot 100 that year, and all but one conquered the ranking.
The following year, 2022, was quieter for the band, as they only added three more Hot 100 appearances to their discography. Notably, they even managed to secure a new top 10 hit with Benny Blanco. It was clear by the end of the year that they were going on hiatus, but fans didn’t stop supporting them.
Now, in 2023, BTS’s “Take Two” continues their reign on the Hot 100, adding another success to their already impressive streak. As the South Korean superstars consistently make their mark on the most competitive chart in America, they prove time and time again that their appeal knows no boundaries…not even when they say they’re on a pause as a band.
